To clean a shag area rug, shake it out, vacuum gently with the beater bar off, spot-clean stains, deep clean, then fluff the pile back up. The long, loose fibres are what make shag cozy and also what make it tricky: aggressive vacuuming and scrubbing tangle and mat the pile, so everything is done gently.
The short version: Shake, gentle vacuum (no beater bar), blot stains, deep clean by type, air dry, and rake the pile to fluff it. Never scrub hard or use a rotating brush on shag.
