To clean a shag area rug, shake it out, vacuum gently with the beater bar off, spot-clean stains, deep clean, then fluff the pile back up. The long, loose fibres are what make shag cozy and also what make it tricky: aggressive vacuuming and scrubbing tangle and mat the pile, so everything is done gently.
Step by step
- Shake it out outside to release trapped dirt.
- Vacuum gently with the beater bar off, or use the suction hose.
- Spot clean stains by blotting, never rubbing.
- Deep clean by the method that suits the rug.
- Dry and fluff the pile back up.

Tired of the upkeep?
Shag looks great but traps dirt and is a chore to clean. If you want the cozy look with less work, a low-pile machine washable rug simply goes in the wash. Compare fibres in choosing the right material for rugs, see how to wash an area rug, and for wool, how to clean a wool area rug.
