Standard area rug sizes are 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, and 10x14 feet, plus runners around 2x6 to 2x8. The most popular sizes are 5x7 for smaller rooms and 8x10 for average living rooms. The right size depends on the room and your furniture, not just the floor space.

The golden rule: measure to your furniture
Rug size is really about how it meets your furniture. Pick a layout: all legs on (most luxurious, needs a big rug), front legs on (most common and forgiving), or floating in front of the sofa for small rooms. Leave 8 to 24 inches of bare floor around the edges so the rug looks intentional.
How to measure for an area rug
- Measure the room and the seating or table area.
- Add the space you want the rug to extend (e.g. 24 inches past a dining table).
- Mark it out with tape on the floor to preview the size.
- Round to the nearest standard size above.
Size and material go together
