What size rug for a living room? For most living rooms an 8x10 rug is the sweet spot, with 5x7 suiting small rooms and 9x12 or larger for open-plan spaces. The three furniture placement rules
- All legs on (most luxurious) — the rug sits under all your seating with room to spare. Needs a large rug, usually 9x12+.
- Front legs on (most common) — only the front legs rest on the rug. An 8x10 usually does this nicely.
- Floating / coffee-table only (small rooms) — the rug sits in front of the sofa under the coffee table. Use a 5x7, not smaller.
How much floor should show?
Leave roughly 8 to 24 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. This frame makes the rug look intentional and the room feel bigger.
