Why oversized has become the default
A 30 x 60 in towel was the old standard, and it is simply too short for most adults to lie on comfortably — your feet end up in the sand. That is why oversized dimensions around 38–40 x 70–71 in have become the size most people actually want.
The old objection to going bigger was bulk: a bigger terry towel meant a heavier bag. Flat-weave Turkish beach towels removed that trade-off. Ours are oversized (up to 39 x 71 in) yet pack down to roughly half the bulk of terry, and they dry far faster.

A bath towel is typically 27 x 52 in — noticeably smaller than a beach towel. Beach towels are longer so you can lie on them, and often thinner so they dry faster in the sun. That is why a bath towel makes a poor beach towel, and vice versa.
