To fold a beach towel: lay it flat, fold it in half lengthwise twice to make a long narrow strip, then fold that strip into thirds. That gives you a neat, flat rectangle that stacks. If you are packing a bag instead of a shelf, roll the towel rather than fold it — rolling saves noticeably more space and prevents hard crease lines.
Method 1: The classic fold (best for storage)
- Lay the towel flat and smooth out wrinkles.
- Fold in half lengthwise so the long edges meet.
- Fold in half lengthwise again — you now have a long narrow strip.
- Fold the strip into thirds, bringing each end to the centre.
- Press flat and stack.
This is the standard way to fold a beach towel for a linen closet or a shelf. Thin, flat-weave towels lie almost perfectly flat; thick terry will always puff up a little.
Method 2: How to roll a beach towel (best for travel)
- Lay the towel flat.
- Fold in half lengthwise once.
- Starting at one short end, roll it tightly and evenly toward the other end.
- Tuck the loose end under the roll, or secure it with a strap.
Rolling beats folding for a beach bag or suitcase: it compresses better, leaves no sharp crease lines, and lets you slot the towel down the side of a bag. This is the method to use when you want to know how to fold beach towels to save space — technically, you roll them.
Method 3: The space-saving travel roll
A tighter variation for carry-on packing:
- Fold the towel into a long narrow strip (halve it lengthwise twice).
- Roll from one end as tightly as you can, pressing air out as you go.
- Slide the roll into a packing cube or the gap along your suitcase edge.
A rolled Turkish beach towel takes up roughly the space of a rolled t-shirt. A rolled terry towel takes up several times that — the single biggest reason travellers switch.
Method 4: The hotel roll (for display)
Fold the towel in half lengthwise, then roll from the short end into a tight cylinder and stand it upright in a basket. Purely cosmetic, but it looks the part on a bathroom shelf or by the pool.
Method 5: The beach-bag quarter fold
Fold in half, then in half again — done. Fast, no fuss, and fine for a towel that is about to get sandy anyway.
