A Turkish towel earns its place because it does far more than dry you off. Because it is flat, light and packs small, one towel can be a beach towel, a travel towel, a sarong, a picnic throw, a gym towel, a baby blanket and a scarf. That versatility is exactly why the peshtemal survived for centuries — it was always a multi-purpose cloth, not a single-use one.
1. Travel towel
The obvious upgrade. It packs to about half the bulk of terry and dries overnight on a hotel rail, so it is ready to repack in the morning. For long trips this alone frees up a third of a carry-on.
2. Sarong or beach cover-up
This is what the peshtemal was originally worn as — a body wrap in the hammam. Knotted at the waist or shoulder it becomes a cover-up walking to and from the water, then goes straight back to being a towel.

3. Picnic blanket or light throw
Spread it on the grass for a picnic, or drape it over the sofa as a light summer throw. It is big enough for two to sit on and washes easily when the picnic gets messy.
4. Gym and sauna towel
Light to carry, quick to dry, and absorbent once washed in. It does not stay damp and musty in a gym bag the way a folded terry towel does.
5. Baby blanket, changing mat or nursing cover
Soft, breathable and machine washable — useful as a lightweight blanket, a mat on the floor, a pram cover for shade, or a nursing cover. One cloth, many jobs, which is exactly what you want with a baby in tow.
6. Scarf or shawl
Lightweight cotton with fringed ends drapes well as a scarf on a cool evening or a shawl over the shoulders. It is the kind of thing you throw in a bag “just in case” and end up using constantly.
7. Everyday bath towel
Back home, it works as a bath towel that dries fast and stores flat — handy in a small bathroom. See beach towel vs bath towel for how it compares.
Why one cloth does all this
It comes back to the flat weave. No thick pile means it is light, folds flat, dries fast and drapes softly — the qualities that let a single towel switch roles. A thick terry towel can only ever be a towel. To understand the weave, read what is a peshtemal and the complete guide to Turkish beach towels.
