A beach towel is longer and often thinner; a bath towel is smaller and usually thicker. A bath towel runs about 27 x 52 inches and is built to be plush at home. A beach towel is 30 x 60 in or larger — long enough to lie on — and often flat-woven so it dries fast and sheds sand. You can use one for the other in a pinch, but each is optimised for a different job.
The differences that matter
| Bath towel | Beach towel | |

| Purpose | Drying off at home | Lying on, drying outdoors |
| Usual weave | Thick terry | Terry or flat weave |
| Look | Plain, muted | Bright, patterned |
| Packs | Stays home | Needs to travel |
Can you use a bath towel at the beach?
You can, but you will feel the compromises. A bath towel is too short to lie on comfortably — your feet end up in the sand — and thick terry traps sand and stays damp all day. It also looks out of place. It works as a stopgap, not a solution.
Can you use a beach towel as a bath towel?
More easily, especially a Turkish one. A flat-woven Turkish towel dries you off just as well as terry (absorbency comes from the cotton fibre, not the pile), and it dries much faster on the rail afterwards. Plenty of people use Turkish towels as their everyday bath towel for exactly this reason. The only thing you give up is the thick, cushioned feel some people love after a shower.

So which should you buy?
- For the beach and pool — buy a proper beach towel, ideally oversized and flat-woven. See our beach towel size guide.
- For a plush at-home towel — buy a dedicated bath towel in thick terry.
- For travel, a small home, or one towel that does both — a Turkish towel is the practical pick.
